In the Past. As it is the case in
many companies in Egypt, workers are transported on the back of uncovered
pickups
These little trucks are not covered and have no seats. Workers fight on who
will sit on the floor, who will be standing the whole trip, and who will dangle
their legs from the side of the truck. During summer time, the intolerable sun
heat beats their heads; and during
the winter season the rain wets their clothes making their lives miserable with
the chilling winds. It is almost a gloomy picture to see people in such
vehicles commuting back and forth to work seeking nothing but food for
themselves and their families. Now. Magrabis Fairtrade committee started
using the premium to help improve workers and employees conditions on the road.
The plan was to cover 150 pickups in three years and buy six vans to transport
permanent employees to their towns during weekends, vacations and holidays. The
vans will help permanent employees save the time spent waiting for a vehicle
and thus be able to spend more time with their families. The execution of the
plan was initiated in 2006 and so 60 pickups have been covered and six vans
were bought. Therefore, about 1200 workers and employees are being transported
in a more comfortable and safer vehicles to their houses about 40-60
Kilometers. Such changes have positively impacted employees and workers. They
are now very happy with the changes, they are more loyal to their work, and
they are producing more, and thus are concentrating more on quality. They
started to bring passion into the workplace. |
