Corporate Social Responsibility
|
|
Magrabi Agriculture is committed to high standards of ethical, social and
environmental responsibility. It is our belief that this policy of responsible
citizenship is not only consistent with our duties to the society, but also
entirely aligned with the long-term commercial and financial objectives of our
company and those of our business partners. In fact, the notion of product
quality is changing to include responsible sourcing, and we can increasingly
expect retailers and consumers to make their choices accordingly. Open
discussion and interaction with all stakeholders is fundamental in order to
continuously improve and strengthen Magrabi's operation and develop corporate
social issues in a sustainable way. By addressing corporate social
responsibility issues, Magrabi Agriculture wants to underline that its business
practices are sustainable, responsible and transparent; and that it is a
respected member of the surrounding community.

FAIRTRADE: Magrabi Agriculture (Mafa farms) is a Fairtrade
producer (FLO ID 3656) and its current scope of certification covers oranges,
soft citrus, lemons, lime, orange juice, grapes, and flowers. FLO-CERT GMBH is
responsible for the inspection and certification of Magrabi Agriculture against
the Fairtrade Standards http://www.fairtrade.net/standards.html
The following Fairtrade Standards principles that are specific to hired labour
situations are respected by Magrabi Agriculture:
- Social development: Some of the core elements are: training
opportunities, non discriminatory employment practices, no child labor, no
forced labor, access to collective bargaining processes and freedom of
association of the workforce, condition of employment exceeding legal minimum
requirements, adequate occupational safety and health conditions and sufficient
facilities for the workforce to manage the Fairtrade Premium.
- Economic development: For all products Fairtrade Standards
require the buyers to pay a Fairtrade Premium to the producers. The Fairtrade
premium is money for the workers on a plantation to invest in improving their
livelihood. Premium money in this sense is meant to improve the situation of
local communities in health, education, environment, economy etc. The workers
decide themselves on what are the most important priorities for them and manage
the use of the Fairtrade Premium.
- Environmental development:Fairtrade Standards include
requirements for environmentally sound agricultural practices. The focus areas
are: minimized and safe use of agrochemicals, proper and safe management of
waste, maintenance of soil fertility and water resources and no use of
genetically modified organisms.
Management of the Fairtrade Premium. MAFA Joint Body, which
includes workers and management, is, among other functions, responsible for the
management of the Fairtrade Premium in accordance with Fairtrade Standards.
Workers and management decide jointly about the use of the premium during MAFA
Joint Body meetings. The Fairtrade Premium is used for the improvement of the
socio-economic situation of the workers, their families and communities.
Procedures, roles and responsibilities are laid down according to the guidance
document from FLO. Magrabi Agriculture and MAFA Joint Body (JB) have the
commitment and capacity to administer the Fairtrade Premium in a way that is
transparent for workers and the certification body.
